About Mercy Ships

Mercy Ships is a global charity that began in 1978, operating hospital ships that have served the medical needs of the worlds poorest people.   Currently the Africa Mercy is the only ship in service, a large Ferry that has been converted to a surgical center that serves those of Western Africa.  Mercy Ships provides health needs to these poor nations regardless of nationality, race or religion.

The model of Mercy Ships is to follow the model of Jesus and provide hope and healing to the worlds forgotten poor.  Through Mercy Ships the blind can see, the lame can walk and those without hope of a future can have a future.

Everyone aboard the Africa Mercy works as a volunteer providing their services to help make this mission a reality.  There are over 400 crew members that live on the ship and serve daily.

In addition to Mercy Ships surgical services, they also work to help train local nurses and surgeons to better serve their people so that the ministry can continue after the ship has left the country.  In addition, Mercy Ships works with local communities to help build better health infrastructure.  This includes community health education and teaching local farmers how to farm in a more efficient and nutritous way.

Though the Africa Mercy only docs in a country for 8-10 months at a time, the impact is felt for many years!
